She is currently Full Professor of Slavic Philology and Russian Language at the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies (DiSLL) of the University of Padua.
She was Associate Professor at the University of Trieste from 1987 to 1991 and taught Russian historical grammar as ‘chargée de cours’ at the University of Geneva from 2000 to 2006.
Her research concentrates mainly on (synchronic as well as diachronic) comparative Slavic linguistics, contact linguistics (with special focus on the Slavic-Romance contact in the Slovene dialects of Friuli), the history and historical grammar of Russian and Russian verbal aspect, especially in relation to the imperative.
Since 1992 she has written numerous papers on the last topic, which analyse the various uses of verbal aspect in imperative expressions in the Slavic languages. These analyses culminated in the monograph Vid i kategorija vežlivosti v slavjanskom imperative , published in 2010, which offers new insights into the pragmatic implications of linguistic politeness for the use of verbal aspect in Russian and in all the other literary Slavic languages.
She has supervised and is supervising various M.A. and Ph.D. theses on verbal aspect, mainly devoted to the diachronic study of verbal aspect in Russian, and the comparative study thereof in the Slavic languages.
She has been a member of the International Aspectological Committee of the MKS (Meždunarodnyj Komitet Slavistov/International Commitee of Slavists) since 2008. In her capacity as a member of this Committee she has organised an international conference on verbal aspect in Padua (Glagol’nyj vid: grammatičeskoe značenie i kontekst / Verbal Aspect: grammatical meaning and context, 30.9-4.10 2011). The proceedings of the conference are in press, due to appear in the series Die Welt der Slaven. Sammelbände (Sagner Verlag, Munich-Berlin).
She has been a member of the International Committee for Grammatical Studies of the MKS (Meždunarodnyj Komitet Slavistov/International Commitee of Slavists) since 2010.
She has been collaborating with several international research institutions: the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics in Zagreb, the Institute of Slavistics and Balkanistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the Chair of Russian Language at Moscow University, the Chair of Slavic Linguistics at the University of Lausanne, the Chair of Slavistics at the University of Tartu and the Chair of Slavistics at the University of Tübingen.
