Title: Playing Refugee. Computer Games as Empowering Strategies

Abstract:

The paper analyses prevalent representations of refugees and asylum seekers in computer games such as Last Exit Flight, Asylum, Escape from Woomera, Darfur is Dying, Food Force and Bordergames. I discuss the medium specific ways in which computer games try to raise awareness of the situation of refugees, present critique of current policies and call for action. I will highlight the practices where refugees and young immigrants tell their stories through designing games. The presented research is part of a research project made possible by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in collaboration with the University of Bergen, the University of East London, the Norwegian Refugee Council and the Norwegian Organisation for Asylum Seekers.
