Title: “Marking Time Between Novels?” Creative Non-Fiction and Literary Journalism by Arab Women Writers

Abstract:

The success and popularity of so-called ‘creative non-fiction’ is by no means a new phenomenon, nor is the critical discourse surrounding its main forms (literary journalism, documentary fiction, life-writing, etc.), which continues to focus on the blurred boundaries between ‘fact’ and ‘fictionThe Hidden Face of Eve: Women in the Arab World (1982; Al-Wajh al-'Ari lil-Mar'a al-'Arabiyya, 1977) to Fatima Mernissi’s The Veil and the Male Elite: A Feminist Interpretation of Women< ’s Rights in Islam (1991; Le harem politique, le Prophète et les femmes, 1987). This paper will examine how forms of creative non-fiction have been used in more recent works by Arab women writers to address the nexus of political events and personal experiences and how issues of authenticity and generic forms (testimonio, etc.) have been negotiated. Textual examples will include Etel Adnan ’s In the Heart of the Heart of Another Country (2005), Ahdaf Soueif’s Mezzaterra: Fragments From the Common Ground (2004) and essays by Hanan Al-Shaykh such as “The Narrative as Echo of the Afghan Scene.”
