Title: | The Monologue as Freedom Discourse: Representations of Life after March 11 in Once voces contra la barbarie | |
Abstract: |
This paper explores how drama develops a discourse on human rights issues in Once voces contra la barbarie. This anthology of one-act plays deals with the aftermath of the March 11 terrorist attacks in Spain and the desire of the participating playwrights to establish a discourse that would address the complexity of the situation in an attempt to heal and better understand the tragedy. It will study how this discourse is inextricably linked to historical events and defined by the perception of the “other” within our society. Particular attention will be given to the power of literature to warn, to create awareness, to point toward solutions as it addresses the dignity of humankind. Moreover, this study will focus on how reality and representation share a symbiotic relationship, how writing both represents the transgressions on human freedom and also serves to exemplify and codify our ideas on human rights violations in general. Finally, this paper attempts to signal the important role that theater may play in human rights issues if given the opportunity. |
